This course I would say was a super brief introduction to the world of agriculture, biological systems, ecology and whatever else would come to mind whenever we hear the word: agriculture. However brief the course was, it definitely served as a catalyst to further explore these topics while sparking a curiosity inside most of us.
During the first day of the course we learned some basic concepts regarding forests, natural ecosystems and some basic "mindsets" in order to fully engage with the topic. All this while gathering a lot of reading material. We also had a mini tour to learn about the urban gardens present in Poblenou neighborhood.
Definitely the highlight of the course was the field trip we took to Valldaura Labs, with us reaching there via a nice hike while we learned about the systems in the forest. Throughout the hike we were learning about the different species present, different methods of propagation such as grafting, and learning about the reproductive systems of pine trees.
Once we got to Valldaura, we got to learn about other soil less systems and how they managed to build their own greenhouse as well as have and manage their own local crops. It truly was an enriching experience to learn about how to actually prep, plant and manage the different crops with their own different needs during the specific conditions of fall in Barcelona as well as the soil conditions.
Finally for the final submission, we needed to choose one farm in the whole world and identify what was wrong with it or how we could improve it. Check out what we did with Javi down here 👇.
