For the new term, we needed to come prepared with our learnings and insights from Design Dialogues; so that's what I did. I added some new things to my design space, along with a new mindset for moving forward. I feel important to include the Atlas of weak signals as well (with a strong focus on the yellow post it's on the bottom) because I believe these insights/topics correctly convey what I want to explore on this term. I'll take them as idea generators.
The Study of the Signs and Symbols of Food in Living Systems
Examines how food functions as a system of communication within biological and cultural contexts.
Could analyze how food conveys meaning in different societies, rituals, or even within the body itself.
The Semiotics of Living Food
Investigates how biological processes in food (fermentation, decay, transformation) create meaning.
Could explore how βalivenessβ in food influences human perception and interaction.
How Eating Itself is a Meaning-Making Process
Examines how acts of consumption, digestion, and nourishment carry symbolic or communicative weight.
Could look at how the act of eating is not just biological but also a sign-driven behavior.
A Framework for Understanding the Intersection of Food, Life, and Meaning
A theoretical approach to food as both a biological necessity and a system of signs that structure human experience.
Could apply to food marketing, gastronomy, religious food taboos, or even how gut microbiota βcommunicatesβ with the brain.
One of the last few exercises I did was a semantic breakdown of what I wanted to achieve with my research. By this I mean breaking down the phrase by individual words and figuring out what I actually mean by them.
This is the phrase I started out with:
How can we use food as a medium to critique and reflect about one's wellbeing?
After doing a lot of analysis and asking myself a lot of questions:
The final focus I chose for my research is:
How can I show the link between processed food and gut health, and how that link impacts our collective wellbeing.
